I am CrossFit – Paul

I have been getting questions (or griping) from some of the males of the species when I will start photographing men as part of my series.  I have been focusing on the women so far because I feel that CrossFit affects men and women in different ways.  Most women have issues with their bodies and how they look.  I think that this is pretty common knowledge.  I have found it to be very inspiring to see how CrossFit and the CrossFit community can change a women’s perception of herself. Instead of worrying about being skinny, women find pride in their strength and accomplishments.
I knew that I wanted to include men in the series at some point, and I figured that I would let Paul go first since he is the one that got me started with CrossFit almost five years ago.  He had already been doing CrossFit for about 6 or 8 months when I came to WOD for the first time.  Our first workout together was Sindy.  I’m a little competitive (shocking) and I tried my best to keep up with his pace – banded pullups and all.  After we finished the owenr of the gym looked at his wife as I lay on the floor panting and said, “We are probably never going to see that girl again.”  The rest of the week I couldn’t brush my teeth or wash my hair because I had a wicked case of T-Rex arms, but I’ve been in to the gym at least 3 days a week ever since and Paul is a big part of that.
Here he is:

My favorite thing about Crossfit is the way it brings people together.  It builds bonds through common strife.  A perfect example is the relationship between my wife and I.  Because of my lifestyle we spend great deal of time apart, and no matter the distance or length of time, the one thing we have in common is our Crossfit community.
I don’t have a favorite lift.  I do have a favorite moment in any physically strenuous activity.  It’s the point when physical action becomes emotional energy.  The moment when you can’t go on, but you do and you become more then you thought you were.  Or you stop and fall short.  Fail and rise to fight again.  Victories are only valuable when you realize the dire consequence of defeat.

When I think of Crossfit I think:
Mind and body becomes one.
The thing that I most proud of is the ability to measure my audience and write a workout that is so nearly out of their capability that by completion they find “emotional content”.
