I have been plotting on doing a personal project for a while now, but I was having trouble deciding what I wanted my subject matter to be. I received the second issue of Photograph, a digital quarterly magazine for creative photographers put out by the lovely folks at Craft and Vision and was looking through the article on Chris Orwig and his project SALT. Chris is an avid surfer and his project documents people whose lives and characters have been shaped by their connection with the sea.
This gave me the idea to start documenting and creating character studies based around Crossfit and the Crossfit community. If there was ever a place that was full of characters, this is it. I am planning for this to be a long term project, so you will probably see additions to it sporadically as time allows. A big shout out and thank you to Crossfit Manassas for allowing me to use their facility for the photos and for not freaking out when I tell them that I want to hang off a ladder 15 feet in the air.
Without further ado, meet Jamie.
What I like most about Crossfit is that anyone can do it! I never lifted weights in the my life before this. You could say I was a “cardio chic.” Then, I started Crossfit and was lifting weights from day 1. It doesn’t take any prior experience and anyone can do it- old, young, small, big. Crossfit doesn’t discriminate! The variety of people in Crossfit only adds to its community appeal.
My favorite lifts/movements would have to be LLBS and pullups. I also have a love/hate relationship with rowing. This stems from when I did novice crew in college. It hurts so f-in bad but it’s great!
When I think of Crossfit I think of…… Endurance, Stamina, Versatility, Community, & Badass!
Up next, I am CrossFit – Holly
